Diabetes Education
Diabetes is a metabolism disorder affecting approximately 17 million Americans – though nearly 1/3 are unaware of their condition. Each year, about 1 million people aged 20 or older are diagnosed with diabetes. Diabetes is associated with long-term complications that affect almost every part of the body and is widely recognized as one of the leading causes of death and disability in the United States. Although anyone can be affected by diabetes, it is most common in older people, overweight and sedentary people, African Americans, Alaska Natives, American Indians, Asian and Pacific Islander Americans and Hispanic Americans.
Due to population growth and an increasingly older, sedentary and overweight nation, the prevalence of diabetes in the United States is likely to increase. According to recent estimates, diabetes is predicted to effect almost 10 percent of the American population by 2025. Research suggests that people at high risk for type 2 diabetes could sharply lower their chances of developing the disease through diet and exercise (Source: The National Diabetes Information Clearinghouse, http://www.niddk.nih.gov/health/diabetes/pubs/dmover/dmover.htm#scope). To help address diabetes in your area, partner with other groups to educate your community. Below are some tips and resources to begin.
- Increase awareness of diabetes through employer sponsored education programs. Host a work-site lunch seminar on diabetes and distribute educational materials to employees. Provide healthy snacks during the seminar.
- Distribute free multilingual media and community campaign materials to local newspapers, radio and television stations, community-based organizations and businesses.
- Sponsor an event or program series during American Diabetes Month each November. For example, organize an "Ask the Pharmacist" day on diabetes or start a mall-walkers program for senior citizens.
- Control diabetes with healthy foods and fun. Consider hosting a community potluck featuring nutritious foods and recipes for diabetics and encourage restaurants to add a diabetes-healthy selection to the menu.
- Play Public Service Announcements (PSA’s) or diabetes awareness videos in your waiting room or lobby.
