Making Our Neighborhoods Better Places To Live, Work And Raise Children

Making available job readiness, counseling, literacy and case management services to residents at the neighborhood level via the contract with RichmondWORKS was the partnership's most significant contribution. Based on the activity from inception to now 708 persons have been cased managed and based on projections for the remaining six months by June 30, 7895 visits will have occurred, which will increase the number of persons serviced to 780 who have been assisted with their employment and training goals moving them one step closer to self sufficiency.

We continue in our efforts to secure sufficient resources for maintenance of the existing level of services provided and expansion of the current menu of services for a more diverse nature of services that will address both the needs and desires of local residents.

Partners For Health Promotes Access to Health Information

Bridging the digital divide is the cornerstone of the “Telehealth Network”. Recently, Partners for Health and the North Richmond Center for Health were awarded a grant of approximately $450,000 to increase resident's access to local and worldwide health-related information available on the Internet. This grant will help create a local health resource information website for the Center For Health; provide computers and telephone lines at seven sites in or near the project area (including three Neighborhood Service Centers); and fund a health educator who will train residents to act as guides to health-related, culturally-appropriate, Internet information.

Key Stakeholders Tour Neighborhood Service Centers

On October 15, 1999, a tour of the Neighborhood Service Centers was conducted. Many service providers, state and local elected officials, and community representatives attended the tour. The centers offer residents convenient access to a variety of career-related services. The tour gave community members from the public and private sectors the opportunity to see the Neighborhood Service Centers in action. As a result of the tour, United Parcel Service pledged to work closely with the Neighborhood Service Centers. To date, United Parcel Service has scheduled and conducted employment workshops and recruitment at the Neighborhood Service Centers.

Strategic Approach to Health Improvement

Partners for Health is the newest link in a three-part effort to improve the health of West Contra Costa County residents. This effort involves three related projects that will improve overall community health. The Contra Costa County Health Services Department manages all three projects. The service area includes North Richmond, Parchester Village, The Iron Triangle in the city of Richmond and the western part of San Pablo.

The Center for Health in North Richmond, set to open in the fall of 1998, will provide primary care and community health improvement services. Funding to build the Center has been provided by General Chemical, Chevron Corporation, Contra Costa County Department of Health Services, The County Redevelopment Agency and a Community Block Grant. The Center will serve the entire community including people with MediCal, Medicare, private insurance or those enrolled in local Medi-Cal Managed care Initiative. Individual payment arrangements are developed for people without insurance.

The Healthy Neighborhoods Project, funded by the East Bay Community Foundation, involves residents in mapping community assets and designing and implementing selected community improvement activities. Examples of activities include the Neighborhood Community Forum, items such as code enforcement regarding abandoned housing, speed bumps, enhanced program and recreation activities and transportation and child care service delivery concerns.

Partners for Health, funded by The California Wellness Foundation, will create a seamless system of preventive services and activities to lower the rates of teenage pregnancy, violence and chronic underemployment. Partners staff emphasize the importance of this strategic approach which involves service provision, strong community resident involvement and institutional change.
